American Heart Month

Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States? Every year, 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease. February is American Heart Month. We can use this time to raise awareness about heart disease and educate people on prevention. Some may not even be aware of what Heart Disease entails. The good news is that everyone can take a stride to owning their health and reducing their risk of heart disease by making lifestyle changes.

What is Heart Disease?

Heart Disease is a disorder of the blood vessels of the heart that can lead to a heart attack. A heart attack happens when an artery becomes blocked, preventing oxygen and nutrients from getting to the heart. A heart attack is a serious medical emergency that must be treated instantly and in some cases can cause death. There are many things that can cause Heart Diseases such as obesity, smoking, high stress, and high cholesterol. Heart Disease can also be caused hereditarily. If you have a family history of Heart Disease visit a cardiologist to make a plan to reduce your risk as much as possible.

  • Make an effort to become more active.

Even a 10-minute walk every day will help you maintain a healthy heart – Avoid stress when possible and develop coping mechanisms when you are experiencing stress. – Keep blood pressure and cholesterol at safe levels.
