Keep the spirit of giving alive this month by donating a lifesaving gift. The month of January is recognized as National Blood Donor Month celebrated by the nation’s leader in blood donations, the American Red Cross.

MAKE YOUR NEW YEARS RESOLUTION TO GIVE

It feels great to donate! Check online to see if any businesses, organizations, or hospitals are holding blood drives in your area. Then, take the necessary steps to make sure you are ready to give. Many heavily populated areas such as cities have blood centers where you are conveniently able to make an appointment to you to go in and donate blood. It is very important to keep your own health a priority, please wait at least eight weeks in between blood donations.

If you are unable to give blood, becoming a volunteer can be as equally important. Reach out to the organizer of a blood drive coming to your area to see how you can do your part. Whether it’s prepping donors to give blood or setting up and breaking down of an event, your efforts will make a difference.

BEFORE GIVING BLOOD

• You must be 18 years old (16 and 17 year-olds can donate with a permission form signed by a parent or guardian)
• Must weigh at least 110 lbs
• General good health
• Must present valid identification
• A well-balanced meal is recommended within four hours of donation
• Hydrate well all day to prevent dizziness or fainting
• Check with your physician regarding any conditions you may have and if it is safe to give blood
