Michigan became the 26th state to join the union on January 26, 1837. Michigan is the only state that is divided into two separate land masses, the upper and lower peninsulas. This is due to the fact that the state is located in the middle of the Great Lakes, which divides up the state. Other than the Great Lakes, Michigan is home to more than 11,000 inland lakes and more than 150 waterfalls. These waterways have helped to create many of the state’s beautiful landmarks. Some of these include Soo Locks and Tahquamenon Falls. With so many amazing sights it is no surprise that the state sees a large influx of tourists each year. In 2015 alone, 113.4 million visitors came to the state to take in the natural beauty.

Michigan Sports

Just like most states Michigan is home to a wide variety of professional sports, most of which are based out of Detroit. For baseball, they have the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers are four-time World Cup Champions, having won in 1935, 1945, 1968, and 1984. As for football, Michigan has the Detroit Lions. While the Lions have never been to the Super Bowl they have won four NFL championships. The Detroit Pistons are the state’s national basketball team. Since moving to Detroit in 1957, the Pistons have won three NBA championships (1989, 1990 and 2004).

While these teams are important to many in the state, possibly the most respected team in Detroit is their hockey team. The Detroit Red Wings have won a whopping 11 Stanley Cups. This puts them as the top NHL team in the United States!
